ssk left-slanting decrease stitch

The SSK stitch is a left-slanting decrease that mirrors the K2tog and is worked with the knit stitch or flat stitch. SSK tbl is a right slanting decrease stitch that mirrors the K2tog tbl and is worked with the K tbl (e-wrap) stitch. To do an SSK or SSK tbl on the loom, you will need to pick up one wrap and hold it with your knitting tool, move the wrap from the peg on either side (depending on which stitch) to the empty peg and the replace the wrap being held on the knitting tool back onto the peg. Sometimes looms patterns will write SSK when they mean SSK tbl. If the pattern is using a K tbl (e-wrap) stitch as the main stitch, it is likely that the SSK is really an SSK tbl.

Because SSK is a left slanting decrease, it is worked on the right side of the loom in flat knitting. If you need to decrease on the left side of the loom, use either an K2tog or an KRPR stitch.

With the Flat Stitch

  1. Pick up one loop and hold it on your knitting tool.

  2. Take the wrap off of the peg to the left and put it on the empty peg to the right.

  3. Put the wrap on your knitting tool back on the peg on top of the moved wrap.

  4. Bring the working yarn in front of the peg, above the two wraps.

  5. Lift the bottom two wraps over the working yarn to knit off the peg.

  6. Pull on the new wrap a bit with the knitting tool to make it looser.

With the Knit Stitch

  1. Pick up one loop and hold it on your knitting tool.

  2. Take the wrap off of the peg to the right and put it on the empty peg to the left.

  3. Put the wrap on your knitting tool back on the peg on top of the moved wrap.

  4. Bring the working yarn in front of the peg, above the two wraps.

  5. Place the knitting tool under bottom wrap in the groove of the peg.

  6. Turn the knitting tool up in the groove and under the wraps on the peg.

  7. Grab the working yarn by circling around the outside and then around its top catching it as you slide the tool down the groove of the peg. This will create a new wrap on the knitting tool.

  8. Grab this new wrap from the knitting tool with your fingers and pull up to take the other wraps off the peg and place the new wrap in your fingers on the peg.

  9. Pull the working yarn to tighten the new wrap on the peg if necessary.
