How to Make Pompoms & Tassels
Pompoms and tassels can add a lovely touch to hats,
purses, shawls, blankets, afghans, etc. Both are easy
to make and are done in a similar fasion.
Supplies needed:
- Yarn
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Crochet hook
- Cut a piece of cardboard 3" wide and as
long as the diameter of the needed pompom.
- Cut an 8" piece of yarn and put aside.
- Wind the yarn around the cardboard until it
is approximately ½" thick in the middle. If you
want a "thinner" pompom, wind less, if you want
a "fuller" pompom, wind more.
- Slip the yarn off the cardboard and tightly
tie the 8" piece of yarn you put aside around
the middle of the pompom.
- Do not cut the yarn ends. Leave them long
enough to tie onto the project.
- Cut the loops on both ends of the pompom.
- Trim the pompom into a smooth ball.
- Cut a piece of cardboard 3" wide and as
long as the entire length of the needed tassel.
- Cut an one 18" piece of yarn and one 10"
piece of yarn and put aside.
- Wind the yarn around the cardboard until it
is approximately ½" thick in the middle. If you
want a "thinner" tassel, wind less, if you want
a "fuller" tassel, wind more.
- Slip the yarn off the cardboard and with
the 18" piece of yarn you put aside tightly
wrap around the tassel about 1" from the top
twice and then tie it.
- Cut the loops on the long end of the
tassel.
- Trim the end of the tassel so that all the
strands are even.
- Slip the 10" piece of yarn through the middle of the head of the tassel. Attach to the piece.
