Chain Cast-on Method

The Chain cast-on method is creates a nice even edge that matches a single crochet bind-off. Use when the edge of your fabric will not be hidden such as with fringe and lace.

Tools needed

  • Round loom or rake
  • Crochet hook
Before casting-on, review the good loom knitting habits. It's important not to wrap tightly.

These directions are for both circular and flat knitting.

  1. Make a slip not and place it on your crochet hook.
If you are circular knitting, you will be working around the loom from right to left and if you are flat knitting, you will be working around the loom from left to right.
  2. Place the crochet hook on the inside of the loom behind peg 1/last peg and bring the working yarn to the front. Grab the working yarn with your crochet hook and crochet a single stitch so that it wraps the first peg/last peg.

  3. Repeat step 2 for the number of pegs that you need.

  4. When you get to the last peg/first peg, take the wrap that is on the crochet hook and place it on the last peg/first peg.
From the front of the loom, you will see one wrap on each peg. On the back, you will see two except for the first and last pegs.
